Mesa Verde National Park: Find that Ancient Pueblo!

July 27, 2016 by Wendy Hirsch in Places

Mesa Verde National Park became such in 1906. In that year,  it had just 27 visitors.  It now has over 500,000 visitors a year.  We dubbed it the park of tours — you can see a lot but most of it is through ticketed tours.  We opted to take two smaller tours, of about 12 people, which were more than worth the price of the tickets.

Wide Open: Valles Caldera

June 27, 2016 by Wendy Hirsch in Places

About 1.25 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera.  It's hard to capture how huge this area is...and how amazing it is to turn the corner from the pine forest to see this massive expanse of green.
